GUANICA
Guánica is a spectacular bay on southern coast of Puerto Rico. Its beautiful beaches attract the tourists for various sport activities like hiking, diving and snorkeling. The Guánica dry forest is announced as one of the World Biosphere Reserve by the United Nations. The forest has 700 types of plants and also trees that include over 1,000 years old “lygnum vitae” tree. The forest also has a 400-year-old Guayacán Tree which is very tall and wide. This forest is a good spot for bird lovers as it has more than 125 varieties of birds.
The places of tourist interest in Guanica are Azul Beach, Ballena Bay, El Malecón Boardwalk and the Farmacia Quesada. One can also see the Guánica Hacienda, Punta de Brea, Punta Jorobao, Santa Rita Hacienda and sugar cane refinery. The city has El Faro Ruins that are the ruins of a Spanish lighthouse with walls and core to the light still standing. The city has Fuerte Caprón fort that was built by the U.S. Armed forces. This fort was named in honor of the first North American soldier killed in Cuba. There is a La Piedra Histórica stone here which is actually a marker that was painted by the U.S. Armed Forces when they entered Puerto Rico from the beaches in Guánica.
Its Ballena Cay beach can be accessed by ferry and is administered by the Conservation Trust of Puerto Rico. The city’s Gilligan’s Island is a Part of the Dry Forest Reserve and is a popular vesting place on the weekends. The divers will enjoy diving from the 20-mile-long coral reef wall running parallel to the coast from Guánica to Cabo Rojo. The other beaches in the area are Balneario de Caña Gorda, Sector Tamarindo, Playa Santa, Playa Manglillo Pequeño and Playa Jaboncillo.
