The City of Humacao
The city of Humacao is a major city in Puerto-Rico, bounded by other cities of Las Piedras, Vieques passage, Naguarbo and Yabucoa. It can be said to have its heritage from the Native Indian routes and it can be described as a natural tropic zone.
Humacao Pueblo is regarded as the administrative center of the city. The city of Humacao was founded or discovered in the year 1722 with 7 senatorial district and 35 representative districts.It has a total mass area of 143.63kn squares and a land and water area of 117 km squares and 26.63 km squares.
In 2002, the population of this developing city was put at roughly 65,000 and with a growth rate of more than 5% annually. The city has a lot of dirstricts including; Punta Santiago, Mariana, collores, catano, Tejas, rio Abajo, Juquinto, Buena Vista, candelero Abajo and the rest.
The economy of this relatively small city of Humacao is quite buoyant. The city of Humacao has Puerto Rico’s largest resort and this makes it a friendly and homely city to dwell or relax. This single resort could be found to occupy and wide land mass in the southern territory of the city, On this resort are world class golf centers, clean and friendly long stretch beaches, more than 15 world class tennis courts, and many local and foreign restaurants.
Three major rivers make the city of Humacao significant. They are the Humacao river, anton ruiz river and the candelero river. The two majot Island on Humacao are; cayo Santiago, which is also known as the monkey island; and cayo Batata.
Talking about Humacao’s national identity, its national flag reveals the true meaning of the different colours concerning Humacao. The green colour on its national flag symbolizes its greenery or its national tropical valley and its Indian heritage, while the gold colour which is also visible on its national flag represents the sun.The sun rises on the Humacao islands.
One major thing the city of Humacao is known for is its snacky food which is also known as “granitos” which is a mixture of fried rice and cheese. Lots of people from other cities in and outside Puerto rico do travel thousands of miles to eat the delicious granites in the city of Humacao.
Talking about festivities and anniversaries in the city of Humacao, one major distinctive festival is the “Fiesta patronal” which is normally held at the beginning of the month of December every year. Though this festivity has lost most of its religious concepts, however the live music and food,drinks and ‘verbenas’ continue to make this festivity a sight to behold and enjoy. Another important festicity in the city of Humacao is the “breadfruit festival”. This festival normally comes up in the first week of September every year.The festival centers around the preparation of many dishes and breadfruit as the main component of these numerous dishes. The competition that comes with this festival makes it a beauty to behold as contestants prepare lots of dishes with breadfruits.
A lot of fund raising activities do happen in the city of Hamacao as well as many local and different festivities and carnivals all year round.
