Lajas, Puertorico

Lajas is under the administration of Puertorico situated in its south-west region. On its south is Sabana Grande and San German, each is Cabo Rojo and west if Guanica.

The places of interest in Lajas include the Cartagena Lagoon, the Indian Museum, Old Silver Mines, Old Train Station and La Parguera. Other attractions include Isla Magueyes, Lajeno soldier monument, Isla Mata la Gata, Rosada beach, Playita Rosada and the Pineapple Processing Plant Ruins. The best tourist attraction in Lajas is the La Parguera or the Phosphorescent Bay which is a place in which luminescent dinoflagellates in different colours can be seen whenever the water moves. The territory of Lajas extends into a vast plain between Las Lomos de Santa Marta in the north and Sierra Bermeja in the south. Its elevation on an average is 40 ft above the sea level. The two natural wonders are La Parguera and the Laguna Cartegena located in between the neighbourhoods of Parlmarejo and Llanos. Its climate is driest and allows salt production along the coast from Boqueron to Ponce. There are no rivers in the valley of Lajas but some of the most fertile areas are present in Lajas and as a result of Lajas Valley Irrigation Project, large area has been reserved for cultivation. The project was launched in 1950 and since then a main canal starting at a dam that regulates the Rio Loco until it enters into the Valley of Lajas, along the border of valley in the north. Other points of attraction include Barrio Palmarejo sector Maguayo, Barrio La Parguera, Monte del Orégano, zona Sur de Lajas, plaza de recreo, departamento de ciencias marinas, iglesia catolica and monumento a los soldados caidos en los frentes de batalla. As far as cultural activities are concerned, there are various festivals conducted every year in Lajas including Christmas Parade, Lajas Craft Fair, Kite & Tigüeros Festival, Celebration of Three Kings of Magi and Serenade to the Mothers.

Travel: Facilities of buses, rental cars and trains are available in the area which travelers can use for commuting and traveling.
