The city of Mayaguez

This is one of the biggest municipal regions in Puerto rico {7th largest}. In the Puerto Rican language, the city of Mayaguez is known as “La Sultana Del Oeste”.Which means the West Sultanese. This beautiful city is located in the western part of the Island of Puerto rico.

The city of Mayaguez was discovered in 1760 from a mountain located at about 2 kilometers from the bay of Mayaguez. The Spanish government gave the city of Mayaguez the freedom of rule officially in 1763 and the settlement was elevated to the status of a villa on 7th of May 1836 and also in 1836, the first mayor was appointed.

It is important to note that most of the settlers in the city of Mayaguez were from the canary island. The city is principally a catholic Christian community while Agriculture remains the main source of economic activities and income for dwellers.

Its major textile partners were the United States and some Asian countries.

The city of Mayaguez is a multicultural society with more than 40% white, and 35% blacks as well as less than 8% Asians and some native Americans and pacific islanders as well as people of different races including the Hispanics, australins, Pakistanis and Indians and many more.

The city of Mayaguez has had its own share of economic downtown In recent times due to the closure of its textile and tuna manufacturing industries, but the city remains one of the most significant contributor to the growing economy of Puerto rico.

The festivals held in Mayaguez include; Mayaguez carnival, which usually comes up from early may to the month end. There are also the mango festival,Christmas festivals,matron celebrations, black and white festival, danzal national festival and many more.

Mayaguez offer a wide range of transportation to both its locals and international tourists. The cruise and cargo ship routes are fantastic and more of these transport system are being licensed every now and then.
