QUEBRADILLAS
Founded by Felipe Ruiz in 1823, the town of Quebradillas is called as “La Guardida del Pirata” which means the hideout for pirates. It is also called as “La Ciudad del Cooperativismo” implying cooperativism city. The name of the town comes from the large number of streams locally running in the town. Literally the meaning of the name is “small streams”. The entire area forms a component of the region of Karst implying that hills shaped as haystacks and sinkholes can be found here.
Quebradillas is situated in Camuy’s west, Isabela’s east, San Sebastianl’s north and borders Atlantic Ocean.
The unusual topography of the Quebradillas can be well exemplified by the state forest of Guajataca. The forest proudly owns an ecstatic reservoir that is manmade. It allows the fishing facility as you can find lots of largemouth bass, blue gill, peacock bass and tilapia in the Guajataca Lake. Activities like camping and hiking are also popular in these areas and thereby boy scouts from different regions find it very exciting.
It is especially the surfers who find the Guajataca beach very alluring and love to bask on its white sands. Ones who visit the beautiful beach also find the activity of collecting a variety of seashells very interesting. Another popular beach for surfing is the Crash Boat while Shacks Beach is much known for scuba, snorkeling, horseback riding and kite boarding.
The other sight seeing places of Quebradillas include the Arecibo historical park and the lighthouse that has a museum showing exhibits. It also has sports facilities, a restaurant with a pirate island and little replicas of antique ships for children. The lighthouse of Punta Borinquen is another historic site.
Villa Pesquera offers beachfront kiosks and restaurants to relax during the day and comes with a thrilling nightlife once the sun is set.
