The city of San juan
The city of San juan, which is also known as the walled city, was founded in the year 1508.Even though the oldest settlers abandoned the city for another one called ‘old juan’ which is today named as san juan in 1521.This history made the city of san juan one of the oldest in Pueto rico. It has a total land mass area of 122 square kilometers and more than 200,000 housing units and a population of more than 500,000 people. San juan is located in the northern karst zone of Puerto rico and it has been found to be a major tourist route of the west indies and it is also a major international port in puert rico for many centuries.
San juan’s per capital income as at 2005 was $12,437 and with the growing economy, it is expected to have risen by more than 15 percent over the years. The city of san juan is said to accommodate the biggest manufacturing and processing industries in Puerto rico, with major emphasis on petroleum, brewing and distilling, sugar refinery, tobacco manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, clothing and cement manufacturing. The metropolitan area of san juan is basically divided into 3 distinctive territories. These are; distinctive outlying communities, the beach and resort areas, and the old san juan which some people call –the original san juan which is more than 465 years old and it used to be the military strong territory. It has however developed to become a beautiful commercial and residential district in san juan however the old Spanish colonial buildings are still present, the casinos are always bubbling with foreigners and locals alike. The tropical climate and the clean long beaches can only be compared with those of the carribeans. Other places one can visit at the old san juan includes; ‘plaza de san jose’ which has a center stand of bronze structure statue of ponce de leon, the ‘plaza de armas’ which is in the main san juan square, plaza de quinto cebntenarion which is the symbol of the 500th year anniversary of the discovery of the new world, it was erected in 1992. Parks in san juan includes; the Munoz rivera park which is a big ocean side with huge magnificent trees ,the parquet de las palomas also known as pigeon park which is located t the top of the city wall is a beautiful site to behold.
Other tourist attraction areas in san juan include; san cristobal which is synonymous with the ancient city defence of san juan; san Geronimo which is located opposite the south end of san juan to boost city defences, the former army storage center which is also known as sanata Elena battery building, which serves as the old storage ware house for the san juan army of the old; the 102 alcaldia ,which was constructed as a tourism information center and gallery for arts exhibition; and many more historical buildings and venues scattered all around the city of san juan will always be a tourist delight any day and any time.
