Yabucoa, Puerto Rico

Yabucoa, a small town of Puerto Rico is spread over an area of around nine wards and is popularly known as The City of Sugar or La Ciudad del Azúcar. Located on the island’s south eastern tip, it is about an hour’s drive from San Juan. Administrative and downtown area of this city is Yabucoa Pueblo. This small town got its name from the word Taíno, which means a land of water and it is called so because there are numerous rivers that help in watering this region of Yabucoa.

The Fiestas Patronales de los Santos Angeles Custodios is celebrated every year in the town of Yabucoa with great zeal and vigor. It includes food, religios processions, dance and parades and is admiringly welcomed by all the Yabucoans.

The most interesting part to note about the town of Yabucoa is its coat of arms. The patron saints of this town are considered to be the Holy Angels Guards. The purple color in it indicates the dignity and respect of these angels while the canes have guajana flowers on them. These canes represent the function of the Holy Angels Guards that they are the companions and guides of every human being. Also, the green color of the land is a symbol for Yabucoa’s fertile land. Apart from an interesting coat of arms, this town is also visited by large chunks of tourists due to its attractive tourist spots like the Guayanes Beach, Panoramic Route and Inés María Mendoza Reserve.
